What is VenaSeal?

VenaSeal is a minimally invasive treatment for larger leg veins with leaking valves, usually the main veins that feed varicose veins. Instead of heat, it uses a medical adhesive to seal the faulty vein closed. Blood then reroutes through healthy veins nearby, and the sealed vein is gradually absorbed by the body.

How it works

  1. Mapping. We use ultrasound to find the faulty vein and plan the treatment.
  2. A small numbing injection where a thin catheter enters the vein.
  3. Sealing. Guided by ultrasound, the catheter places small amounts of medical adhesive along the vein while gentle pressure is applied on the skin.
  4. Done. The catheter is removed, a small bandage goes on, and you walk out.

Because no heat is used, VenaSeal doesn’t need the series of numbing injections along the vein that heat-based treatments use.

Before treatment, we explain what to expect, answer your concerns, and make sure you feel informed and comfortable throughout your visit.

Who it’s for

VenaSeal is used for larger veins that no longer work properly, often the source of varicose veins, aching, and swelling. Dr. Yeo recommends it after reviewing your ultrasound, and explains how it compares with ClosureFast and Varithena for your veins.

After treatment

  • Walk out on your own and return to normal activity the same day
  • Walking is encouraged
  • Many patients don’t need compression stockings afterward; Dr. Yeo will tell you what’s right for you
  • Mild soreness or bruising can happen and usually settles on its own

Bulging surface veins may shrink after the faulty vein is sealed. Any that remain can be treated with microphlebectomy or ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.

Insurance

When vein disease causes symptoms such as pain, heaviness, swelling, cramping, or skin changes, treatment may be considered medically necessary. Coverage depends on your plan and clinical findings. We check your coverage before your visit. More about insurance and cost.
