Varithena microfoam treatment in Honolulu
Varithena is a prescription microfoam used to treat certain varicose veins, including some veins that are difficult to treat with other approaches. Your clinician will use ultrasound findings and your symptoms to determine whether it may be right for you.
- Treatment time
- 30–60 min
- Back to activity
- Same day
- Numbing
- Minimal local
- Best for
- Varicose veins, including twisted ones
What is Varithena?
Varithena is an FDA-approved microfoam medicine for treating faulty leg veins and the varicose veins they cause. The foam fills the vein, including twisted sections that a straight catheter can’t easily follow, and makes it close. Blood then reroutes through healthy veins nearby.
How it works
- Mapping. We use ultrasound to find the faulty vein and plan the treatment.
- Minimal numbing where the medicine is placed.
- Treatment. Guided by ultrasound, the microfoam is injected into the vein through a small needle or thin catheter. It fills the vein and closes it.
- Done. A compression stocking goes on, and you walk out.
Before treatment, we explain what to expect, answer your concerns, and make sure you feel informed and comfortable throughout your visit.
Who it’s for
Varithena is used for varicose veins, including twisted ones, and the faulty veins that feed them. It can be a good option when a vein is too winding for a catheter-based treatment. Dr. Yeo recommends it after reviewing your ultrasound.
After treatment
- Return to normal activity the same day
- You wear a compression stocking for about two weeks afterward
- Walking is encouraged; follow your aftercare instructions about exercise
- Treated veins may feel firm or tender for a while as they close and fade
Insurance
When vein disease causes symptoms such as pain, heaviness, swelling, cramping, or skin changes, treatment may be considered medically necessary. Coverage depends on your plan and clinical findings. We check your coverage before your visit. More about insurance and cost.
